the role of mobiles in context

I (phil) have been researching the practical role of mobile phones in social change related projects. In surveying the literature, I have found that much as been written about the social uses of mobile phones and how they change or enhance social relations, but relatively little rigorous academic literature has come out regarding mobiles as a tactical tool that exists in a larger communication environment. To help fill this gap, I have been looking in activism literature, development literature, and public health studies, as well as reports issued by NGOs like Mobile Active and the Vodafone Foundation. Moving forward, I hope to fill this gap with a more rigorous assessment of the role mobile phones play in benefiting the groups that use them in the context of other tools available to them. Keep checking this space for more on this…
